Factory & History of Making Knife in Sakai Osaka
The origin of the Sakai cutlery far goes back to the construction
of the Nintokuryo Tumulus in 5th century.
At that time, the craftsman gathered from the whole country in Sakai
to produce the navvy tools such as plows and hoes necessary for this
large-scale earthwork and they settled.
On the other hand, in Tenmon period (1532 - 1554), the cigarette was
introduced from Portugal and quickly became popular, so the demand
for the kitchen knife to chop the cigarette leaf.
Then the blacksmith craftsman in Sakai started manufacturing the cigarette
cutting knife, and its excellent technology was appreciated by the
Tokugawa Shogunate at that time, and then it monopolized with Sakai
brand stamped on it.
Therefore, the fame of the Sakai cutlery has spread to nationwide
various places as the only home of the cigarette cutting knife.
Later, the dish kitchen knives such as the "Deba" kitchen knives and
the "Usuha" kitchen knives were manufactured and the technology was
diversified. In 1982, it was specified for the traditional craft goods.
And the tradition for many years has been succeeded incessantly now.
